Pedro Martins explains departures and changes at Santos: ‘New mentality’

On the same day as the dismissal of the football professionals, the club’s new CEO held a press conference and talked about the transfer market

On the same day that Santos announced the move to the board of directors, the club’s new CEO, Pedro Martins, held his first press conference. In it, the director explained why he accepted the invitation of president Marcelo Fernandes and what Alvinegro’s path will be in this new start in Serie A.

“When he comes to me he does an extensive analysis of how Santos is positioning itself in an extremely competitive market. In which the SAF are making big moves. In which the professionalization of the football department is not a path to follow but rather a necessity” , he underlined.

Martins explained the departures announced by the club on Friday morning (03). The CEO stressed that the layoffs are close to what Santos is thinking about for 2025.

“The departures are in line with the moment the club is going through. President Marcelo Teixeira, when he invited me, invited me to think about the restructuring of Santos as a whole. I made a diagnosis, a broad assessment of how the club it’s going to be managed, and at this time we have chosen to make some changes,” he said.

Arrival of Pedro Caixinha

The hiring of Peixe’s new coach is linked to what is being done to change Peixe’s mentality. Martins even made sure, even before it was officially announced, that the Portuguese coach signed a contract with Alvinegro Praiano.

“The first step was the search for a coach who was integrated with this idea, that is Pedro Caixinha. And now we are making other changes that try to place Santos in a new mentality, in a new way of being managed,” he stated .

The new CEO also explained the tripod adopted by Peixe to work during the season. The club now seeks unity, modernity and identity for a new era within Santos.

“All this because we have chosen a tripod to work with. The first point is the search for the unity of Santos, having a single objective, we must have a similar way of thinking about football. According to modernity, we must put all the practices of Santos with the knowledge that the best is being done in the world. And thirdly, identity, we must also look for an identity to manage our daily lives,” he explained.

Is Soteldo in Santos?

“All this is being taken into consideration and discussed with Caixinha. There are some players who have already received proposals and we are taking them into consideration to see what resources are available for Santos, what we can alleviate from the payroll and how we can use surplus resources But, in principle, all these players whose loan expired on 31/12, if there is no negotiation, we have to re-present on a case-by-case basis and Caixinha is aware of this possibility”, underlined Martins.

Departure from Otero

“There was a possibility and a discussion made before my arrival and that of Caixinha. In the list of priorities that we made with the technical committee, he was not among the priorities. In the meantime, the possibility arose that he would go and play for another club and he chose to go there,” he said when speaking about the Venezuelan’s departure for Uruguayan Nacional.
