Review: VW T-Cross 2025 changes to remain at the top among SUVs

We tested the new Volkswagen T-Cross Comfortline with 1.0 TSI 128 HP engine, which has new features to continue to be Brazil’s favorite

It’s hard to change something that works. Even so, the Volkswagen T-Cross gained some new features last year to maintain its leadership in the heated compact SUV segment. And we tested the new Volkswagen T-Cross Comfortline (R$ 167,790), one of the best-selling versions of the model, for a week in Rio de Janeiro-RJ. Check.

Launched in 2019 in Brazil, the Volkswagen T-Cross was still a highly sought-after car in the segment. However, with the arrival of new competitors in recent years, the German brand has decided to change some aspects of the model’s design. As a result, the Brazilian version took inspiration from the European T-Cross – changed a year earlier – and became more modern.

At the front, the T-Cross got new LED headlights, with a new visual signature, as well as a new grille and redesigned bumper. Visually, the set is pleasing, even more so with the beautiful metallic Norway Blue color, which adds R$1,750 to the final price. However, the IQ.Light headlights with projector were missing, which are more efficient and which equip the European model in the top of the range versions.

Since these headlights are not produced in Brazil, the cost of importing them would have a negative impact on the price of the domestic T-Cross, produced in São José dos Pinhais (PR). In addition, the Brazilian Volkswagen T-Cross also dispensed with the illuminated grille and daytime running lights under the headlights, as in the European model.

On the sides there are only new rims, which in the Comfortline version are 17″ and have a diamond finish. At the rear, the LED lights have acquired new internal elements and are now interconnected. In the previous model there were only reflective lights on the horizontal bar that runs across the trunk lid.

The new set, however, made the design more sophisticated and modern. Again, the European T-Cross has a different layout, with “X”-shaped elements, more similar to the Jeep Renegade. But this time, in my opinion, the Brazilian model was more beautiful. The rear bumper is also new and the license plate is located on the trunk lid.

Inside, the recipe was once again inspired by the European T-Cross. The finishes, which were one of the most criticized points of the old T-Cross, got a new design, as well as parts with rubberized vinyl covering in the central part. On the doors the finish also received a larger fabric strip.

Another new feature is ambient lighting, which generates a positive visual effect at night. It should be noted, however, that the Brazilian T-Cross could also feature a rubberized upper part of the panel, as in the European model. The 10.1″ VW Play multimedia center is now more clearly visible on the dashboard, in a higher position, and has quick and intuitive controls, as well as a screen with good resolution.

However, perhaps a physical button for the on-off function and volume control would make the experience even better. Another highlight is the 10.25″ digital instrument cluster, which has retained the qualities of the previous model, such as good display and screen resolution.

The driving position is excellent, something that was already a quality of the SUV. Even though it is slightly taller than other MQB-A0 platform cars, the ergonomics are good and visibility is very good. The steering is very direct, feeling light when maneuvering and more decisive as the speed increases. The seats, covered in synthetic leather, are very comfortable.

Under the bonnet, the Comfortline version is equipped with the well-known 1.0 turbo flex engine with 116/128 HP (petrol/ethanol) and 200 Nm, always associated with a six-speed automatic transmission. This set equips almost all versions of the T-Cross, with the exception of the Highline, which features a 1.4 turbo with 150 HP and 250 Nm, with the same gearbox.

While driving, the T-Cross Comfortline is very agile in urban areas and on the highway, although you notice a more noticeable delay when you press the accelerator pedal. This is due to the new regulations on polluting emissions, which will become more stringent in 2025. Already anticipating the new rules, the German brand has modified the acceleration system of its cars to reduce consumption and emissions.

One of the solutions to the delay is to use the sport mode on the gearbox, which actually makes the car smarter, despite the increase in fuel consumption. Officially Inmetro publishes averages of 8.1 km/l (ethanol) / 11.9 km/l (petrol) in the city and 9.8 km/l (ethanol) / 14.1 km/l (petrol) on the highway. We had averages of 9 km/l with ethanol on a mixed cycle (city/highway).

In terms of performance, it goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 10 seconds and reaches 192 km/h. It’s not exciting, but it’s a good package for city and road use. For those who want better performance, especially when traveling with the family, there is the 1.4 turbo engine in the Highline version. The suspension is soft and filters road imperfections well. The body doesn’t lean as much in tighter turns.

While changing some aspects, the T-Cross also retained its good characteristics. This is the case of the boot with up to 420 liters and good internal habitability, thanks to the 2.65 m wheelbase of the Virtus, longer than the 2.56 m wheelbase of the European SUV. This translates into more space for rear seat occupants, who also have rear air vents. Another advantage that only the Brazilian T-Cross has.

The equipment list is good. There are six airbags as standard, in addition to ACC, autonomous emergency braking, push-button start and face key, start-stop, paddle shifters, digital air, reversing camera, induction charger , multifunction steering wheel, front and rear. parking sensors, among other items. The T-Cross measures 4.22 m long, 1.76 m wide and 1.57 m high.

The unit we tested also comes with the optional Sky View II package (R$7,690), which adds an electrochromic interior rearview mirror, front reading lights, rain sensor and panoramic sunroof. This last element is also exclusive to the Brazilian T-Cross, which shows that Volkswagen has had to make some concessions, but has also provided some extras for the domestic model.

For this reason the new Volkswagen T-Cross is very popular thanks to its well-balanced package. The finishes could be a little better, as well as some elements of the European model could be offered in Brazil. Another area where it could improve is the price, which is high. However, the model offers a killer recipe in the segment: good interior space, good handling, safety and a modern look.

And this translates into the model’s sales numbers. In 2024 alone, 83,975 T-Cross units were registered in Brazil, the best year for the SUV in the country since its launch in 2019. This makes it easy to recommend the “favorite” model in the domestic market. However, in Brazil’s most competitive segment, it may need to become a little more refined and “electrified” in the coming years.
