Mushuc Runa forward Mathias Acuña was found dead in a hotel room in the city of Ambato, Ecuador. The 32-year-old Uruguayan had just signed up for the pre-season of the Ecuadorian first division team.

Through social media, players playing for Acuña, Mushuc Runa and the Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) mourned the striker’s death. “How sad, you can’t believe it. May you find peace wherever you are,” wrote Manuel Ugarte, of Manchester United and the Uruguayan national team, who played with Acuña at Fénix.

“The Mushuc Runa Sporting Club expresses its regret for the delicate passing of Mathías Acuña. We offer our condolences to his family and loved ones in the face of an irreparable loss,” wrote the club that played for the player.

“We regret with deep sadness the death of Uruguayan footballer Mathías Acuña. Our condolences to his family, colleagues and friends. May he rest in peace,” the AUF said.

Trained by El Tanque Sisley, from Montevideo, before leaving his country, Acuña accumulated experience in the Uruguayan football clubs, Boston River, Fénix and Liverpool. In Greek football he played for Larissa and Lamia. In 2024, the player returned to Uruguay for another experience at Fénix and, in the middle of the year, he was transferred to Mushuc Runa, from Ecuador.
