President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva returned to activities at the Palácio do Planalto, after facing a medical emergency in December 2024. During a meeting with leaders of the National Congress, Lula began experiencing headaches. He was then taken to Sao Paulo, where he underwent surgery to drain a hematoma.
Lula’s recovery has been cautious, with doctors advising him to avoid long travel. Despite his recovery, Lula is still unable to resume his usual physical exercises. These medical restrictions have affected his agenda, limiting the president’s presence at events outside Brasilia earlier in the year.
Lula’s life in Brasilia during his convalescence
Since leaving hospital, Lula has divided his time between the Palácio da Alvorada and the Granja do Torto, where he seeks tranquility and contact with nature. In the last days of 2024 he chose to spend more time at Granja, in the company of his wife, Janja da Silva.
In addition to resting, Lula took advantage of his time in Granja to deal with government matters. Last Friday (3), he met the Minister of Defense, José Mucio, the commander of the Navy, Admiral Marcos Olsenand other government representatives, fulfilling their agenda.
The meaning of the event of January 8
On January 8, Lula will participate in a significant event marking two years since the 2022 uprisings, known as the Coup Acts. The event will begin in the morning with the delivery of the restored works of art, including valuable pieces such as a 17th century clock and a Portuguese amphora, symbols of the country’s rich history, damaged during the riots.
The ceremony will be followed by the “Embrace of Democracy”, a symbolic walk through Praça dos Três Poderes, an event organized by the Workers’ Party. The intention is to promote a gesture of unity and democratic resistance, recalling the attacks on the headquarters of the three powers.
How important is the event for the government?
The president of the PT Gleisi Hoffmann, stressed the importance of remembering the events of two years ago as part of a commitment to preserving democracy. The memory of these acts is not intended to revive division, but to consolidate an ongoing commitment to Brazil’s democratic institutions and ensure that similar incidents do not happen again.
The event symbolizes not only the resilience of Brazilian institutions, but also the commitment to justice and repairing the damage caused to national symbols. The restoration of the works of art is part of the commitment aimed at healing the wounds left by the revolts, strengthening the cultural and historical value of the structures that house the powers of the Republic.
