Mohammad Abedini was arrested in Milan at the request of the United States
The Iranian government said on Monday (6) that the arrest of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, accused of violating Islamic laws, is not related to the detention of Iranian Mohammad Abedini in Milan, three days earlier, at the request of the United States.
“These two issues have nothing to do with each other, we read in a statement from the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Orientation, underlining that the Italian woman was arrested for violating the laws of the country.
“The Italian journalist was arrested for violating Iranian laws, while the measure taken by the United States against Abedini is a kind of hostage-taking,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said.
Furthermore, Tehran’s representative added that Sala’s arrest is the subject of an Iranian investigation. “The announcement on the latest developments and details of the case falls to the spokesperson of the judiciary [Asghar Jahangir]”he added.
According to Baghaei, Iran hopes that the Italian government will not allow bilateral relations to be influenced by the United States, which accuses Abedini of exporting parts of the drones used to kill three American soldiers in Jordan.
Sala, a 29-year-old freelance reporter for “Il Foglio” and podcaster for Chora Media, has been held in solitary confinement in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison since December 19.
Last weekend, in fact, the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni discussed the case with the president-elect of the USA, Donald Trump, at Mar-a-Lago and, according to the newspaper “The New York Times”, “exerted strong pressure ” as part of the Italian government’s efforts to try to secure Sala’s release.
On January 15, however, a hearing will be held at the Milan Court of Appeal regarding a request for house arrest for the Iranian engineer. .
