Filmicca announced its January 2025 releases with emphasis on contemporary national cinema. Every week, a work from our cinema premieres on the platform. To top it off, the new edition of My French Film Festival will be available free of charge to platform subscribers from January 17th to February 17th.
Contemporary national cinema
- The awardee Welcome Againfrom the director Marcos Yoshiopens national premieres on January 3rd.
At the turn of the millennium, Japanese descendants Yayoko and Roberto Yoshisaki went to try to make a better life in Japan, while their three children stayed in Brazil with their grandparents. The couple returns 13 years later, and the family goes through a complex emotional reconstruction, documented by their son Marcos Yoshi. The story of a family divided between the need to ensure their livelihood and the desire to stay together.

- The following week, on January 10th, it is time Kevinfrom the director Joana Oliveira.
In the work, Joana visits her friend Kevin in Uganda for the first time. They became friends 20 years ago when they studied together in Germany and haven’t seen each other for a long time. From this meeting, the film weaves the fine plot that is a conversation between two friends: the stories of the past, the desires, the paths taken, the different ways of facing the matter of the experience and a bond of love and sisterhood that resists the distance and time.

- From the director Affonso Uchôa (Arabia and Tiger’s Neighborhood), Seven Years in May premieres on January 17th.
One May evening, seven years ago, Rafael arrived home after work. As he opened the gate, someone called his name. He looked to the side and saw people he didn’t know. Rafael left his house carried by strangers and never returned. Since then, he has lived as if that night had never ended.

- The Mysterious Death of Pearl is the film that opens on January 24th.
Directed by Guto Parente and Titian Augusto Limathe work is a thriller about a young student who leaves her country, home and boyfriend to study art in a French city. She lives alone in a beautiful, but dark and old, apartment, where the paintings stare at her and the doors seem to have a life of their own. She is lonely, and slowly loses herself in nostalgia and fear, merging dreams, fantasy and reality.

- The documentary Guaicurus Streetfrom João Borgescompletes the program and premieres on January 31st.
Guaicurus Street is one of the largest prostitution areas in Brazil, located in the center of the city of Belo Horizonte, since the 1950s. Currently, more than 25 hotels operate in the region, with approximately three thousand sex workers. The film will reveal this huge prostitution complex through situations that arise from the relationships between its characters.

My French Film Festival
Once again, Filmicca is an official partner of the largest online French film festival in the world, organized by Unifrance!
