Netflix announced on Friday (22/7) that it will launch a new series from Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive” and “Neon Demon”). Entitled “Copenhagen Cowboy”, the attraction will be the director’s first production shot in his native Denmark in 15 years.

“We are absolutely thrilled to finally be able to announce that we have teamed up with Nicolas Winding Refn, one of Denmark’s most acclaimed directors, and are bringing him back to Denmark to produce a local series after more than 15 years abroad,” said Jenny. Stjernströmer Björk, Netflix’s Nordic Series Development Director.

Described by the platform as an “emotion-filled, neon-filled noir series”, “Copenhagen Cowboy” revolves around a young heroine named Miu (Angela Bundalovic) who navigates the criminal underworld of Copenhagen.

The production has already finished filming and will be distributed globally by Netflix later this year.

“Copenhagen Cowboy” is the second series in Refn’s career, which in 2019 released the little-seen “Too Old to Die Young”, starring Miles Teller (“Top Gun: Maverick”), on Amazon Prime Video.

“With ‘Copenhagen Cowboy’, I go back to my past to shape my future by creating a series, an expansion of my ever-changing alter egos, now in the form of my young heroine Miu,” Winding Refn said in a statement.

“Collaborating with Netflix and bringing this series to life has been an absolutely wonderful experience on all levels. I see them not only as my partners in many future adventures, but also as my friends. The new term was born: Netflix Winding Refn. “

The series stars Angela Bundalovic (“The Rain”), Zlatko Buric (“2012”) and newcomer Lola Winding Refn (the director’s daughter).
