Streaming fatigue? Americans end 2024 spending less on service

How many streaming subscriptions do you currently have? I asked myself this question between 2024 and 2025. As you know, here in Brazil, the month of January is usually cruel to our pockets.

You come from spending a little more on holidays or recreation, Christmas and New Year and you change all this with IPVA and licenses. And with registration and school supplies – for those with children.

Subscribing to a single platform does not weigh heavily on your bill. The problem is that there are people who have 5 or more at the same time. And it is precisely these people who are starting to review these costs.

It’s like this in Brazil, it’s like this in the United States, where a survey just showed that in 2024 there was a significant decline in Americans’ spending on this type of entertainment. On average, $42.38 per month was invested this past year – 23% less than the previous period.

Other behaviors

Since this is something relatively new, the market does not yet understand consumer behavior 100%. And the United States almost serves as a laboratory for this.

This streaming fatigue had already been reported for a few years. A survey indicated that 25% of subscribers in the country have canceled three or more services from 2022 to now.

Many of them suspend their subscription and then resume it, especially sports fans. For example: someone who really likes the Champions League subscribes to Max only during the months the competition lasts. In others, that person goes and cancels the plan.

As we said, this is something that happens not only in the USA, but in several other parts of the world. Even here at home.
