CinemaFernanda Torres on winning the Golden Globes: ‘I didn’t defeat anyone’

Torres won the award for Best Actress in a Drama Film at the awards ceremony last Sunday, 5th; she competed with names like Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman

Fernanda Torres won this Sunday, 5th, the Golden Globe Best Actress for her role in I’m Still Heredirected by Walter Salles.

The actress competed for the award against Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton, Pamela Anderson, Kate Winslet and Angelina Jolie. Although she surpassed Oscar-winning artists, for example, Torres refused to admit that she defeated her professional colleagues.

After displaying I’m Still Here node Palm Springs International Film Festivalthe daughter of Fernanda Montenegro told the audience (via Folha de S.Paulo): “I didn’t defeat anyone. I refuse to say that because it was a big year for women. And mature women.”

“There are so many awards and festivals to share. Nicole [Kidman] stayed with Venice, Angelina [Jolie] will win hers, Marianne Jean-Baptiste also. And there was Demi [Moore] yesterday… There are so many different films that no one is defeating anyone”, he explained.

Torres also added about his victory: “One of the beautiful things about yesterday [domingo] and I will have this memory forever in my life: I saw Tilda [Swinton]saw Kate [Winslet] and then Nicole. And they were applauding me and happy that I had won… because I wasn’t supposed to win.”

I’m sure they were happy because a film like ours was being recognized through me. It was good because this means that films like this must be produced.

The last time Brazil had secured the Golden Globe was in 1999, when Central Brazil (1998) won the award for Best Foreign Film. In the same year, Fernanda Montenegro competed for the Best Actress category, but lost to Cate Blanchett.
