The Walking Dead has finally revealed how Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira will return as Rick and Michonne (and will not be in theaters)

After nearly four years of The walking dead Fans suffering from Rick Grimes drought, with Andrew Lincoln leaving the seminal series midway through season 9, AMC and franchise lord Scott Gimple have finally given everyone a confirmed reason to celebrate. Lincoln is confirmed to reunite with Michonne, who has also been missed by Danai Gurira, for a new project that will not be a full-length series as originally planned. Instead, they’re getting their own TV spinoff!

After the San Diego Comic-Con panels for tales of the living dead Yes The walking dead, Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira joined Scott Gimple on stage to announce an untitled limited series for AMC Studios that will continue Rick and Michonne’s epic relationship and journey. The six-episode series will air in 2023, with Gimple as showrunner and three as executive producers.

Here’s how Andrew Lincoln responded in a statement:

This was Rick Grimes’ most extraordinary journey for the better part of a decade. The friendships I’ve made along the way are deep and lasting, so it’s only fitting that I can finally finish the story with Danai, Scott and the rest of the TWD family. I’m so excited to be returning to the screen as Rick, reuniting with Danai as Michonne, and bringing fans an epic love story to add to the Walking Dead universe.

They seem to really play with the elements of the romance here, which makes a lot of sense since they don’t have their kids around to ruin their romantic moments. I’m kidding, of course, because returning to loved ones will definitely have a role to play in the story. Not to mention the explanation of how they met in the first place. It will be a real disappointment if it takes three episodes to put them together. But for now we remain optimistic!

Michonne got bloodied on The Walking Dead

And that’s what Danai Gurira said about winning Michonne for the first time since her release in season 10.

Michonne and this TWD family have meant the world to me, and continuing the journey of these beloved characters, along with Scott and Andy, both creatively and on camera, and giving The Walking Dead fans something truly special is simply glorious. I can’t wait to get the katana back in my hand.

It is unclear whether this project has a connection with rumors that Gurira will have its own spin-off series on Disney + based on it black Panther character. But we know it won’t stop Lincoln’s next return to the small screen for an episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix anthology cabinet of curiositiesas this series will air later this year.

This news is surprising enough for fans who have been waiting for updates on what was supposed to be a theatrical trilogy focused entirely on Rick Grimes. Updates for this project were rare. , because all the COVID stuff has been a huge detriment to progress as the creative side of things. But while Danai Gurira’s involvement in the feature plan has only been speculated, we now know Michonne will be as much a part of Rick’s return as the former lawyer himself.

It looks like 2023 is too far away, but fans can expect to see not just another season of fear of the living dead Yes the first season of Isle of the Dead but now we know we will also see Rick and Michonne finish their stories forever, and inside CMA where it should be. Until that glorious day arrives, head to our Program of the first TV 2022 to see what other new and recurring shows are going in prime time and beyond.
