THE Public Prosecutor of Bahia (MP-BA) has launched an investigation into the locations Claudia Leitte at the center of a controversy over religious racism. The controversy began after the singer replaced, in her performances, a line from the song “Caranguejo” – “Saluting to Rainha Iemanjá” – with “I sing my King Yeshua”, a reference to Jesus in Hebrew.
The change, adopted in 2014, when Claudia converted to evangelical Christianity, has reignited debates on respect for Afro-Brazilian traditions and the impact of the cultural actions of artists with large audiences.
The investigation
According to g1, the complaint was submitted to the MP-BA by Iyalorixá Jaciara Ribeiro and by the Institute for the Defense of the Rights of Afro-Brazilian Religions (Idafro). According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the investigation investigates the possible “violation of cultural heritage” and discrimination against religious communities of African origin.
The promoter Livia Sant’Anna Vazresponsible for the case, has called a public hearing for January 27 in Salvador, where the artist and the authors of the song will be heard.
Claudia Leitte has 15 days to present her official defense, but, so far, the singer declared in a press conference that “racism is an issue to be discussed seriously, not superficially”.
