Understanding Conmebol’s strategy to identify racism on the networks during the Libertadores

With the help of artificial intelligence, the entity uses a tool to detect and curb manifestations of hatred in real time

With the aim of monitoring and identifying racist demonstrations on social media during the Libertadores, Conmebol has adopted a new strategy. In this sense, the entity used artificial intelligence to track comments and publications involving clubs, players and fans. The goal is to analyze linguistic patterns and possible hate speech.

According to the entity, the technology allows it to act in a more agile way. It works to identify and report cases, which reinforces the zero tolerance policy against discrimination in football.

The resource will have to work in real time, in an attempt to monitor interactions on the main digital platforms during matches and also in the pre- and post-match periods.

More democratic sports ecosystem

Increasingly, clubs and companies linked to football are using technology to make the sports ecosystem healthier and more democratic, which is present in various areas.

The Brazilian Thaiany Klarmann is therefore marketing manager of CUJU, an application that uses artificial intelligence to analyze players’ passes, shots, agility and impulse. The professional then commented on the way in which the program captures videos and produces a ranking completely free of any type of bias.

“CUJU is open to all young athletes. The technology only compares performance and does not differentiate athletes by social class, skin color or power of influence. The platform was born from the desire to democratize football,” he said.

Technology helps in several areas

In view of this, major global football clubs, such as Real Madrid and Manchester City, as well as Flamengo, Palmeiras and Atlético-MG, are already making great contributions to improving the healthcare facilities of their respective athletes. This movement includes investments in artificial intelligence, the technology used to predict future injuries and prevent them.

“The use of technology in the preparation of athletes, combined with science and a personalized service, is essential for the player to reach his full potential. Artificial intelligence has gained importance by bringing together a series of data whose analysis is essential to provide improvements in performance and health,” explained Túlio Horta, COO and Head of Operations of Volt Sports Science, a health and service platform for elite football athletes.
