The 2025 UFC season kicked off this Saturday (11th) in Las Vegas, with another event held at the Apex. Two Brazilian fighters took on the main bout of the evening, Mackenzie Dern and Amanda Ribas, in the strawweight division
It was a close fight, especially on the ground. There, where he is a specialist, Dern managed to calmly position himself and, in the third round, secured the submission to get the win and keep his title dream alive.
The fight
The main event of UFC Vegas 101 saw Mackenzie Dern go for low kicks and combinations to fend off Amanda, who responded with good combinations. Soon, Dern would get the takedown and try to use the jiu-jitsu he had excelled at in his career. But with a rival who defended a lot and defended a lot, little happened on the pitch in offensive terms.
The Brazilian of American origin attempts low kicks again, but is knocked down by Amandinha and the fight is once again on the ground, in which Dern, even from below, moves well and uses his elbows, suffering from the ground and the rival’s blow. Mackenzie went for the omoplata, then intertwined her arms and attempted the sweep in the final moments of the second round.
In the third round, Amanda Ribas started more offensively and attacked Dern, who responded by going for a takedown, which was defended by her opponent. Soon the fight went to the cage, the two clashed and fought for control until Amanda took her to the ground and worked the earth and hammer on top,
In turn, Mackenzie Dern worked elbows and tried an armbar, which was defended, but a sweep put the US-born Brazilian on top and she moved to mount. Amanda resisted, suffering her rival’s blows as she reached for her arm. When she got the submission, the retreat was neat and Mackenzie Dern survives in the fight for the belt.
The Brazilian night
Six more Brazilians got into the action at UFC Vegas 101. César Almeida faced Abdul Razak Alhassan, in a fight that promised and delivered two fighters dedicated to showcasing their respective strengths in stand-up combat. Cesinha was knocked down by a ‘stick’ from the Ghanaian, but managed to get up. Alhassan managed to complicate the Brazilian’s life, but caught him very well with a left cross, precise and which immediately knocked out the fighter, giving him another victory.
Looking to rehabilitate himself, Felipe Bunes took on Jose Johnson and did what he could to show he was up to speed on the field. Even though he fell for the American, he managed to turn the tide and dominate. Potiguar’s jiu-jitsu was brilliant and as such, he worked on getting the armbar and submission to win again in the Ultimate.
One of the UFC’s newcomers of the evening, Marco Túlio faced Ihor Potieria and spared no power in his strikes. The fight started with both fighters attacking and exchanging powerful blows. As the fight continued, “Matuto” felt the best moment of the fight and a right “bomb” hit the Ukrainian on the ground, opening the space for a sequence of punches that would end up determining the end of the fight, and the victory of the debut.
Needing a win to rehabilitate himself, Thiago Moisés used low kicks well to annoy Trey Ogden. The American’s left leg was the favorite target of the champion from Campinas, who never stopped aiming at it, also resorting to takedowns to prevent Ogden from bothering him in any way. With this Thiago left no room for his opponent’s reaction and took home the victory according to the judges’ decision.
The first Brazilian to enter the octagon at UFC Vegas 101 and another newcomer, Bruno Lopes took on Magomed Gadzhiyasulov. Even without being able to practice his striking game, Brunão had to gamble on the cage grab attempt, despite failing to get takedowns. It was in this way, tiring the Bahraini fighter and without exposing himself too much offensively, that the freshman managed to dominate the fight and obtain the victory in his debut.
She didn’t have the same luck as her compatriots Nicolle Caliari against Ernesta Kareckaite. Another freshman in the organization this Saturday, the flyweight from Curitiba has invested well in her striking from the start to deal with more ground strategy. The situation improved for the Lithuanian in the second round, strengthening herself in standing combat and managing well the threat of takedowns from Nicolle, who maintained her posture and had a well-fought third round, but was unable to beat her rival in the game to avoid defeat.
