More than 153 thousand citizens have received evacuation orders
The number of people killed in the fires that devastated Los Angeles, in the United States, has risen to at least 16, the city medical examiner’s office reported on Sunday (12).
According to local health authorities, 11 bodies were found in Eaton, near Altadena, an area devastated by flames. Five others died in Palisades, in the upscale Pacific Palisades neighborhood.
Last Saturday (11th), the Eaton fire destroyed 5,600 hectares of land and was only 15% contained, while the Palisades fire burned just over 9,100 hectares and was 11% contained.
More than 153,000 Los Angeles citizens were ordered to evacuate. The most worrying front, according to the authorities, is that of the Palisades fire, defined by Los Angeles fire department spokesman David Ortiz as a “multi-headed monster with the possibility of growing in different directions”.
To make matters worse, the respite from the Santa Ana winds didn’t last long, as a new front of gusts up to 50 miles per hour began to blow through parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties again. Speeds are expected to increase between Monday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
“I am close to the inhabitants of Los Angeles County, California, where devastating fires have occurred in recent days. I pray for all of you,” Pope Francis said during the Angelus celebration. .
