Chris Hemsworth in Thor: How did the actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Watch Chris Hemsworth’s first audition for the role of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. An actor who was noted for the rivalry between the actor and his little brother Liam.

It’s September 2008, since Iron Man hit theaters, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is taking its first steps on the international stage. While billionaire Tony Stark and his armor have just been introduced to the public, the next heroes set to enter the dance are super-soldier Captain America… and the god of thunder, Thor.

Although Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: Beginning) and Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy) were both considered to direct the latter’s adventures, Kenneth Branagh was ultimately chosen to direct the film. Indeed, this Shakespearean filmmaker seems like the perfect candidate to bring to the screen the family tensions of the kingdom of Asgard, and especially the fratricidal battle between Thor and Loki.

Strangely, this rivalry between the two brothers – an integral theme of Thor’s adventures – goes so far as to find an echo in the feature film’s casting.

Among the many candidates hoping to take on the red cape and the precious hammer are two members of the same brotherhood: Chris Hemsworth, who we know ended up inheriting the role, and his younger brother Liam, who was almost chosen to replace him.

“I passed the casting with Kenneth Branagh, I thought I hit the bull’s eye, and then I had no news”– said Chris Hemsworth at the microphone W magazineafter years.“But my little brother, who was in Australia, sent them a video. He got one call, then another, and then he was 4 or 5 finalists for the role.”

When he hears the news, Chris is in Vancouver filming “The Cabin in the Woods” with Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon (Avengers: Age of Ultron). Encouraged by two filmmakers who urge Hemsworth to try his luck again, the actor’s agent manages to approach producer Kevin Feige and make a new meeting.

“So I was in my hotel room in Vancouver reading Anthony Hopkins (Odin) with my mom.”– says the actor. “And he must have hit the nail on the head, because it got me back in the game. The second casting was very different from the first. I came away motivated and maybe a little bit upset that my little brother got ahead of me. (laughs). It’s a sibling rivalry. So that gave me a boost, and then it went pretty quickly.”

A few months later, in April 2011, Chris Hemsworth can land in the cinema in a Thor costume, in front of Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, who also passed the tests to portray the God of Thunder. As everyone knows, so this is the beginning of a rich career in the MCU for the actor, who is currently on the 9th hammer throw (counting the post-credits scenes) in the universe. Marvel.
