Didactic and affectionate Cinema, MMA – My Best Friend raises awareness about autism; RS already seen

Starring Marcos Mion, Antônio Fagundes and Guilherme Tavares, MMA – My Best Friend hits theaters starting this Thursday (16)

A man who doesn’t fight for his family doesn’t fight for anything else. The phrase is the guiding thread of the story of Max Machadadaprotagonist of MMA – My Best Friendfilm directed by José Alvarenga Jr. (Supermax), and his interpreter, Marcos Mionafter both their lives were transformed by becoming parents of a child on the autistic spectrum.

With script Paulo Cursino (The Farofeiros) and Daniel Belmonte (BO), and supervision and argument from the Mionthe film tells the story of Maxa great MMA champion, who is facing the end of his career. Since suffering a serious shoulder injury, the womanizing athlete has lived away from the ring, not taking his training seriously, just remembering his glory days.

Its trajectory changes when Laís (Andréia Horta, City of God: The Fight Doesn’t Stop) enters the scene and reveals that Max is the father of Bruno (Guilherme Tavares, Chico Bento and the Wonderful Goiabeira), an eight-year-old autistic boy. The news takes the fighter by surprise and now he has to deal with responsibilities beyond his career in the sport.

Who follows the trajectory of Mion knows how significant the story is for the presenter, as well as a personal achievement. The star of the film, which hits theaters this Thursday (16), is the father of Romeo19 years old, who is on the autism spectrum, and is dedicated to being a spokesperson in defense of the community’s rights.

The fight beyond the ring

However, in MMA – My Best Friendthe presenter leaves his characteristic charisma aside to star in a drama about a fight that goes beyond the ring. While Max adapts to atypical fatherhood, he also needs to prepare for the biggest fight of his career, his last chance to make a triumphant return.

As he approaches Bruno and reestablishes a connection with his father, a former boxer played by Antonio Fagundes (Good Success), the audience follows the journey of a man redefining his existence, his career and his sense of victory by understanding that his titles and prestige are nothing if he does not have the love of his son.

The fighter’s transformation

Mion He went to great lengths to surpass the physique of the famous movie fighter. The feature drinks at the source of the greatest classic of the genre, Rocky, a Fighter (1976), and pays homage Sylvester Stallone in scenes where Max runs alongside a train and in the final fight. But, despite the violent context, the fight sequences are toned down.

The actor is clearly having fun in the role. He oscillates well between charismatic moments of the athlete, who needs to mature, and scenes of tension, in his desire to protect his son from prejudice. However, in these moments, it is Guilherme Tavares who steals the show, with a unique charisma, and impresses when portraying the crises of Bruno.

MMA – My Best Friend goes beyond entertaining. The film proposes important reflections on the social inclusion of autistic people in a sensitive, affectionate, didactic and non-romanticized way, an important platform to increase awareness.
