Back to the Future is a veritable goldmine when it comes to references and Easter eggs of all kinds. However, there is one very small detail that must have escaped the biggest fans of Robert Zemeckis’ directorial saga!
To see one of the most hidden references in the saga, you have to skip to 24 minutes and 35 seconds in the first part and freeze frame. Doc introduces the time machine to March’s Two Pines Parkway parking lot.
A very, very well hidden detail!
After testing time probe with Einstein the dog, Dr. Emmett Brown sets out to explain how time travel works with his sidekick Mart. Doc is dressed in a white anti-radiation suit. If you look closely in his left pocket, you will see a small notebook with orange and green tints.
The detail is almost invisible to the naked eye, but by magnifying the notebook, you can make out its pattern. It’s a gremlin with a bucket of popcorn on his head!
This little notebook was sold at the time as a spin-off of a franchise started by Joe Dante in 1984, a year before the first episode of the Time Saga came out.

Like Back to the Future, Gremlins is produced by a certain Steven Spielberg, who couldn’t resist the urge to include this little reference in his friend Robert Zemeckis’ film. According to the pattern, we can read 3 famous rules to follow when you have a Mogwai: “Keep him out of water, never expose him to light, and most importantly, never and under no circumstances feed him after midnight.”
Now that you know the time code, it’s up to you to check out this easter egg for yourself! Does this mean Gremlin is set in the same universe as Back to the Future? We’ll let you weigh in on that!
