Steven Spielberg released a statement paying tribute to the director David Lynchfollowing the announcement of his death yesterday, January 16, at the age of 78. In a statement to The Hollywood ReporterSpielberg praised the filmmaker’s impact:
I loved David’s films. Blue Velvet, City of Dreams and The Elephant Man They defined him as a visionary dreamer who directed films that seemed handmade.
Spielberg also recalled working together on The Fabelmanswhere Lynch played John Ford, in his last performance. “I met David when he played John Ford in The Fabelmans. Here was one of my heroes – David Lynch playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and felt like a scene from one of David’s own films.”
In conclusion, Spielberg highlighted the loss for the world of cinema: “The world will miss such an original and unique voice. His films have stood the test of time and always will.”

In a post on Lynch’s official Facebook page, the family announced his death and asked for privacy. “It is with deep sorrow that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and artist, David Lynch. There is a huge void in the world now that he is no longer with us. But as he would say, ‘Focus on the donut, not the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies everywhere.”
