The work placed the actress at the level of the highest paid artist in Hollywood, but not everything was perfect
The 1990s proved special for Demi Moore. During this period, the actress starred in the main works of her career and achieved enormous popularity. One of the highlights of the period was Striptease (1996), a film in which, as the title indicates, she had to play a stripper.
The work made Demi Moore the highest-paid actress in Hollywood at the time: she pocketed US$12.5 million to play the protagonist. However, not everything was perfect: even with the generous fee, the artist says she felt ashamed of the feature film for one reason in particular.
In conversation with the podcast The Interview (via Variety), Moore revealed that Stripteaseand To the Limit of Honor (1997) resulted in negative reviews from both men and women. That was when she revealed the reason that made her feel ashamed of the first film mentioned.
With Stripteaseit was as if he had betrayed his women and with To the Limit of Honorit was as if he had betrayed the men. But I think the most interesting thing was when I became the highest paid actress. Why, at that moment, was the choice to try to demean myself? I didn’t take it personally. I think anyone in my position, of being the first to get equal pay, would be attacked. But as I made a film that dealt with the world of strippers and the body, I was extremely embarrassed.”
Demi Moore: no comparisons with Bruce Willis
At the time he recorded Striptease, Demi Moore was married to Bruce Willisanother very successful name in that period. When she agreed to participate in the film, she assured that the idea was not to compare her career with that of her then husband, but to show that she deserved to receive the same salary. She also compared the situation with another experienced during pregnancy.
It wasn’t about comparing myself to him. Yes, I saw how much he earned. It was more about, ‘Why can’t I too? If I’m doing the same job, why can’t I?’. It’s no different from when I did the cover of Vanity Fair pregnant. I don’t understand why it was a problem: should pregnant women hide? Do we have to deny that we had sex? That’s the fear: if you show your (pregnant) belly, it means, ‘Oh my God, you had sex.’”
