Defender David Luiz, formerly of Flamengo, has agreed to sign with Fortaleza. The information comes from Esportes O Povo. The athlete will therefore remain in the Ceará club for two seasons and, at the end of the contract, he will still have the possibility of renewal.
At 37 years old, David Luiz should appear next week at Leão, for the official announcement of his contract.
Despite his age, Fortaleza underlines that David Luiz is an experienced player, a multiple champion, with technical quality and leadership spirit, virtues that coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda likes. The club also took into account the fact that the athlete demonstrates zeal for physical preparation, with a low risk of injury throughout the year.
David Luiz left Flamengo with raids
David Luiz had been at Flamengo since 2021 and his departure was met with controversy because, according to the player, he learned from the press – not from the club – that Flamengo had decided not to renew his contract.
“Just as you (journalists) received the statement on Instagram, it was the same for me. Either it was intentional or a bit amateurish,”said David Luiz, in an interview with Sportv, on 12/28.
At the end of the year, Flamengo’s new sporting director, José Boto, responded to the criticism by saying that what happened was “professional”.
“When I want to sign a player I don’t talk directly to the player. The agents get angry when we do that. I was in Croatia, they asked me to communicate as soon as I had a position. As soon as I met with Filipe Luís (coach), I communicated very early in the morning to the competent people”, he explained.
With the purchase of David Luiz, Fortaleza makes its sixth reinforcement for 2025. Corinthians and Cruzeiro were also investigated on the defender, as well as Austria Vienna-AUS and Olympiakos-GRE.
