After evaluating and identifying the need to wear glasses, the young people were able to choose the frames provided by a partner optician.
The Municipal Department of Health (SMS) of Porto Alegre, in collaboration with the traveling NGO SAS Brasil – Saúde, Alegria e Sustentabilidade, delivered this Saturday, 18, 200 glasses to the auditorium of the Medical Association of Rio Grande do Sul (Amrigs ). The action is the result of an initiative launched last year in the mobile units parked in Largo Zumbi dos Palmares, with the aim of serving children and adolescents from 0 to 16 years old with visual difficulties.
Included in the task force, student Ana Lívia Rocha Araújo, 14, accompanied by her mother, nurse Elisabete Rocha, 52, went to take off her glasses during the event. “I have distance vision problems, and for a student this is very bad, so I was looking forward to this moment,” he said.
Ophthalmological care was directed to patients previously registered in the Consultation Management System (Gercon), of the municipality’s Regulatory Centre. After evaluating and identifying the need to wear glasses, the young people were able to choose the frames provided by a partner optician.
For the occasion, SAS Brasil presented the 2024 Social Commitment Trophy of the city of Porto Alegre to the municipal secretary of Health, Fernando Ritter, as a symbol of gratitude for the partnership built over the last year. The RS Ophthalmology Society (Sorigs) was also represented at the event.
“Today we celebrate a very special moment for Porto Alegre, marking the delivery of glasses to children and adolescents who will now have better conditions for learning, coexistence and quality of life. The partnership with SAS Brasil strengthens our commitment to more accessible healthcare and inclusive The trophy is a collective recognition of this mission”, underlined Ritter.
