The Episcopal leader called on the president to have mercy on immigrants and the LGBTQ community
The President of the United States, donald trumpcalled the bishop of Washington, Mariann Edgar Budde, “disgusting” on Wednesday the 22nd, and demanded an apology for saying she was spreading fear among migrants and LGBTQ people.
“The alleged bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday is a radical leftist who hates Trump. His tone was unpleasant, he was neither convincing nor intelligent,” the president wrote on his Truth Social network.
The president attended Mass Tuesday at the Washington National Cathedral, presided over by the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington.
In her speech, the religious leader lectured the new president on the decrees signed against LGBTQ people and migrants after assuming her second presidential term on Monday.
“I ask you for mercy, Mr. President,” the bishop said, speaking of the “fear” that, according to her, is felt throughout the country.
The president, who previously limited himself to saying that the function “was not very exciting”, this time harshly attacked the bishop on his social networks.
“In addition to her inappropriate comments, the sermon was very boring and uninteresting. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology,” he said in the post.
Among the dozens of executive orders Trump signed Monday night are measures to suspend the arrival of asylum seekers and expel migrants who are in the country illegally.
Trump also decreed that only two genders will be recognized: male and female, but not transgender. /AFP
