The Houthis release the cargo ship’s crew after 14 months

The Galaxy Leader ship was hijacked with 25 sailors

The Iranian-backed Yemeni Houthi rebel group announced on Wednesday (22) the release of the crew of the cargo ship Galaxy Leader, kidnapped 14 months ago.

The release occurred after the entry into force of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas in the conflict in the Gaza Strip. The news was released through an official press release from the group.

The crew, made up of sailors of various nationalities, was arrested during a naval operation in the Red Sea on November 19, 2023. In total they were 17 Filipinos, two Bulgarians, three Ukrainians, two Mexicans and one Romanian.

At the time, a Houthi-owned helicopter hijacked the vessel, while rebel gunmen surrounded the vessel and took those on board hostage.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacked several merchant ships in the Red Sea as a kind of revenge against Israel for its military offensive in the Gaza Strip. .
