One of the highest paid in the world, English actor seriously reflected on the topic: “everyone was constantly saying that cinema was dying”
Robert Pattinson has become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood today. Celebrated by the general public and specialized critics, the English actor is among the highest paid on the planet and has accumulated praised works such as Tenet (2020) and Batman (2022).
However, this trajectory could have been interrupted prematurely. The 38-year-old actor revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair who seriously considered leaving the profession in recent times.
According to Pattinson, the covid-19 pandemic raised the first alert. The strikes by writers and actors, which began in May and July 2023 respectively and ended in November of the same year, made the reflection even more intense. In his mind, it all seemed to signal the end of modern cinema.
“It’s strange because in the last few years for the film industry, starting with Covid and then the strikes, everyone was constantly saying that cinema was dying.”
Speeches of this type have already been disseminated in the cinematographic field on other occasions. However, Pattinson seemed convinced this time.
“[Ocorreu] quite convincingly. I was literally almost turned off. In fact, it started to get a little worrying.”
Robert Pattinson didn’t feel inspired by Hollywood
Also to Vanity Fair, Robert Pattinson admitted that he didn’t feel inspired by what was happening in Hollywood. For him, the scripts presented by the studios in recent years seemed uninspiring.
“Every actor for two years was saying, ‘What’s going on? Nothing is cool’. I’m not saying that everything that came out wasn’t cool, but it was actually all very studio-y. I don’t know what was really going on, but now there are really cool jobs everywhere.”
Pattinson returns in 2025 with his next film, Mickey 17. Mixing science fiction and acid humor, the work is directed by Bong Joon-ho and cast also composed of Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Tony Collette and Mark Ruffalo.
