The Brazilian’s work in the film Still I’m Here, directed by Walter Salles, was recognized at the Golden Globes and has a real chance of winning the main cinema award

It’s official: Fernanda Torres is in contention for Oscar. The Brazilian competes for the Best Actress award, one of the main ones at the event, for the role of Eunice Paiva in the film I’m Still Heredirected by Walter Salles.

It is worth remembering how recognition happens 26 years after her mother, Fernanda Montenegrobe nominated in the same category in the Oscar 1999 put Central Brazil (also directed by Salles). Unfortunately, she lost to Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love.

Apparently, Torres arrives with a real chance of winning. According to the columnist and entertainment critic Johnny Oleksinskifrom New York Post — in an analysis published before the nominees were announced —, the Brazilian is one of the main competitors for the Best Actress award and is in a direct dispute with Demi Moorein the running for The Substance.

Oleksinski highlighted that the growing admiration for Fernanda and Demi weakened the chances of other actresses in the category, such as Nicole Kidman (Babygirl) and Angelina Jolie (Maria), who were considered favorites at the start of the season. In fact, the two were not even nominated: in addition to Torres and Moore, they are competing for the award Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora).

The awards ceremony is scheduled for March 2, 2025, with a presentation of Conan O’Brien. The broadcast in Brazil will be from the channel TNT and the streaming service Max.

Fernanda Torres and Demi Moore considered themselves “zebras”

Fernanda Torres won the Golden Globe in the category Best Actress in a Drama Film. In turn, Demi Moore took home the prize for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical Film. Both artists’ speeches made it clear that they seemed not to wait for recognition.

The Brazilian, for example, said that she had not even prepared a speech. She stated:

“My God, I didn’t prepare anything because I was already satisfied. This was an incredible year for female performances. So many actresses here that I admire so much. And, of course, I want to thank you, Walter Salles, my partner, my friend. What a story, Walter! And, of course, I want to dedicate this award to my mother. You have no idea. She was here 25 years ago. And this is proof that art can last a lifetime, even during difficult times, like this incredible Eunice Paiva, who I made, went through. And the same thing that is happening now, in a world with so much fear. And this film helps us think about how to survive in difficult times like this.”

The American recalled when a producer defined her as a “popcorn actress”, as if she was incapable of performing notable work for awards shows and specialized critics.

“I have been in this profession for a long time, more than 45 years, and this is the first film in my acting career in which I have won. […] 30 years ago, a producer told me that I was a ‘popcorn actress,’ and at that time, I interpreted that to mean that I had no right to something like that, that I could make successful and profitable films, but that I would never be recognized. I believed in this, I bought into this idea, and, over time, it ate at me, to the point where I thought, a few years ago, that maybe this was the end, that maybe I had already done everything I was supposed to do. And while I was going through a difficult time, a magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely insane script called The Substance appeared on my desk, and the universe told me that I wasn’t finished yet.”

What is the story of I’m Still Here?

Based on the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, I’m Still Hereis set in Rio de Janeiro, in the early 1970s, amid the military dictatorship, and tells the story of Eunicemother of five children, who becomes involved in an endless search for the truth after her husband, Rubensbe taken away by undercover police officers and disappear.
