Hamas releases four Israeli hostages in second exchange after ceasefire

The Palestinian military group Hamas released on Saturday morning, the 25th, four Israeli soldiers who had been held hostage since October 2023. They were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza, according to the Reuters news agency. In exchange, 200 Palestinian prisoners will be released by Israel.

The four hostages were taken to a pulpit in Gaza, amid a large crowd of Palestinians and surrounded by dozens of Hamas gunmen. They waved and smiled before they were eliminated, entered into vehicles by the Red Cross and transported to the Israeli forces. The moment was recorded by international agencies.

Shortly after 12:00 local time (7 a.m. in Brasilia), the Israeli military released an update saying that the released hostages – Daniella Gilboa, Liri Albag, Naama Levy and Karina Ariev – had reached the reception point in southern Israel and are already gathered with their parents. Army medical officers perform an initial medical evaluation in women.

The soldiers were all at an observation post on the edge of Gaza when they were abducted by Hamas in October 2023.

The exchange that took place this Saturday is the second since a ceasefire began last Sunday the 19th. On the same day, Hamas released three hostages, including women. However, they were not part of the Israeli army and were abducted in different locations. At the time, Israel released 90 Palestinian prisoners.

The ceasefire agreement has been in the making for months, with interventions from Qatar, Egypt and the United States.
