First-time medical student at USP studied 12 hours a day: ‘Very hard work’

Luiz Filippe completed high school at a public school in Taboão da Serra (SP) and was a scholarship holder for an entrance exam course.

“It’s a huge relief. After so much effort, you’ve achieved the course of your dreams. It’s really beautiful, it’s fulfilling. You’re happy, you can’t believe what’s happening.” This is how student Luiz Filippe Campos Soares, 18 years old, defines how he feels after passing 1st place in Medicine at the University of São Paulo (USP), through Provão Paulista.

Says the young man, who lives in Taboão da Serra, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo Earth who chose Medicine because he was fascinated by Biology since he was a child and because he likes taking care of people.

“Medicine is a profession to which you must dedicate your whole life. Not only to your profession, but to all of humanity, since you take care of another person’s body, you take care of a human being. That’s why I this profession was fascinating,” he reveals.

Luiz Filippe completed high school last year at the Escola Estadual Professor Francisco Vicente Lopes Gonçalves and was a scholarship holder of the Objective course. Through the Provão Paulista he also managed to pass the Medicine course at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and the State University of São Paulo (Unesp), but he has already decided that he will be the new freshman at USP.

The student found out that he had obtained a place in Higher Education on January 20th and last Wednesday, the 22nd, he was present at the traditional celebration for those who passed the course. He was accompanied by his mother, dentist Raíssa Loren Campos, 34.

Excited, she praised her son: “I didn’t realise. It’s a wonderful feeling. I haven’t slept for three days due to so much anxiety, so much emotion. But I was sure he would make it. For all the effort he made to all this time, I was sure he would realize his dream. He makes me proud every day.”

12 hours of study per day

Luiz Filippe started preparing for the entrance exam since his first year of high school and says it was “very hard work”. From the second year he alternated his studies in public school with elementary school. As a result, I spent at least 12 hours a day studying.

“I have been preparing since my first year. In my second year of high school I understood that I had to prepare in a more targeted way. And that’s how my father gave me the advice to enroll in a course. I spent seven hours at school and five more in the course. So I studied for about 12 hours a day. I had to do a lot of hard work to keep up with the program.

The young man comments that, throughout the process, he received a lot of support from his family. “The support of parents, teachers, family, everyone is essential. Because those who are with me know how much I fought for this.”

Appeal from the governor of SP

After seeing the results of the Provão Paulista, Luiz Filippe was surprised by the call from the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, to congratulate him on his result. The young man told the governor that it was the happiest day of his life for having studied Medicine at USP. Watch the video:

Al Earthhe says he was very surprised by Tarcísio’s call. “No one told me anything, it was suddenly. I realized that he had called me as soon as I saw his face on his cell phone. It was a huge surprise, I didn’t understand anything.”

Classes at USP will only begin in February, but the young man is already organizing himself to start university in the best possible way. “I’ve already received some PDFs from some friends to see if I can study before starting university. I want to come a little more prepared,” he says.
