Expert explains the impacts of alcohol on the body and gives advice to protect your health

According to the expert, alcohol serves as a substance of immediate and late effects in the body. “We usually drink for the purpose of recreation: we become happier, more relaxed and even socialize better,” he explains. However, excessive consumption leads to a series of metabolic reactions that can undermine organs such as the liver, stomach and nervous system.
Alcohol is metabolized by the liver, becoming acetaldehyde, a toxic substance. This process, combined with gastric irritation and changes in blood sugar levels, causes the famous hangover symptoms: headache, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. “A hangover is a metabolic effect involving liver aggression and stomach irritation. Additionally, hypoglycemia may occur, and in some cases, alcohol may still be circulating the next day,” details Dr. Cynthia.
Over the years, the body processes alcohol less efficiently, making hangover symptoms worse. “As we age, our metabolism slows. The liver functions more slowly, and other factors, such as loss of muscle mass and increased body fat, also affect it,” he says. Additionally, hormonal and neurological changes make the body more sensitive to the effects of alcohol.
How to avoid a hangover
To reduce the impacts of the drink, the doctor recommends:
- Nourish before and during alcohol consumption: “Drinking on an empty stomach increases gastric irritation and promotes hypoglycemia. Consumption helps reduce the effect of alcohol in the body.”
- Moderate in quantity: respect the boundaries of the organism. For reference, two cans of beer or two glasses of wine per day are considered acceptable for most people.
- Avoid dangerous mixtures: Combining spirits with other drinks quickly increases the level of alcohol in the body, warns Dr. Cíntia.
- Hydration: Dehydration is one of the main contributors to hangovers. Alternate between alcoholic drinks and water.
