The RS government can reduce the July holidays to compensate for the postponement of the school year

The Secretariat of Education evaluates the replacement of the lost school days due to the heat wave

The Rio Grande do government is studying to reduce the July holidays to compensate for the postponement of the start of the state school year, which should have started on Monday (10). The secretary of education, Raquel Teixeira, confirmed the possibility in an interview with Radio Gaúcha, noting that the replacement is necessary to conform to the 200 school days requested by law.

“Yes, we have the July holidays when we can advance school days to be compensated this week before. So we are working with the idea of replacing in July,” said Raquel.

The situation begins

The office of the Prosecutor General (PGE-GRS) appealed to the decision of the Court which suspended the beginning of the school year due to the extreme heat and is waiting for a new opinion of justice. If the determination is not changed, the lessons will start next Monday (17).

The RS State Network currently has 2,320 schools and about 700,000 students and 42% of students are in a situation of social vulnerability.

Measures to face heat

The Secretariat of Education (Seduc) follows civil protection notices and monitors the conditions of schools to ensure the safety of students and teachers. Some preventive measures adopted include:

✅ Evaluation of the infrastructure of schools and feeding and water conditions

✅ Reinforcement in hydration and lighter food in school meals

✅ Suspension of physical education lessons to avoid excessive exposure to heat

The organization of the new school calendar is under discussion with the National Union of Municipal Education Manager (Undime-GRS) and the Union of Private Schools of RS (Sinepe-T).
