The legendary show has mocked the actor twice.
Almost a week after the Oscars 2022, Hollywood continues to experience the consequences of the slap that Will Smith gave Chris Rock in full direct. The last to join the reactions to the controversial moment have been the comedians of ‘Saturday Night Live’, who yesterday Saturday broadcast two skits where they parodied both the slap and the speech that the actor offered when he won the Oscar for Best Actor for ‘The Williams Method’.
In the videos, which ‘SNL’ has shared on Twitter, we can see two different moments. In the first, we see Will Smith sitting in his seat at the ceremony when one of the so-called seat filler (anonymous people who fill the seats of celebrities while they are on stage or absent) he starts talking to her very excited and telling her that he has been a fan of hers for a long time. Suddenly though, we hear Chris Rock pull the now infamous ‘Lieutenant O’Neil’ prank on Jada Pinkett Smith, and Will Smith gets up from his seat, we know what for. The fan’s face changes completely, the smile is erased from his face and he doesn’t know how to act when the actor returns. It seems that he doesn’t want a selfie anymore, what he wants is to be swallowed by the earth. To top it off, his partner comes back from the bathroom and asks, “What did I miss?” The parody plays on the idea that Smith remains impassive, going from laughter to rage in a matter of seconds.
The second of the skits takes us back to the classic ‘Saturday Night Live’ news set, where the host says the 2022 Oscars slap in the face “has divided Hollywood.” Y to comment on the event, they bring someone who knows a lot about controversies: OJ Simpson. As we know, Simpson is a former football player who was charged with double homicide in 1997, and since then the story has been the subject of adaptations such as in the first season of the series ‘American Crime Story’. “I hate conflict,” he tells the host when he asks him to position himself between Will Smith and Chris Rock. And then he drops a pearl: “Love drives you to do crazy things… supposedly”.
After Will Smith’s assault on Chris Rock on Oscar night, we learned that during the commercial break Will Smith was comforted, and also that the Academy invited him to leave and the actor refused. Chris Rock avoided being taken into custody by refusing to press charges, even though Los Angeles police were apparently already on the premises. The next day Will Smith apologized on Instagram and began the process to, according to its statutes, sanction the actor. Two days later, Smith decided to make the decision before the Academy did: the actor has resigned from being a member of the Hollywood Academy. And his career? At the moment the productions of ‘Two Rebel Police 4’ and ‘Fast and Loose’, his film with Netflix, have been paralyzed.
