‘This Is Us’: will there be season 7 or spin-off of the series?

Time to say goodbye to the Pearson family…or is it?

Spoilers for ‘This Is Us’ below

It’s been a long road but the Pearson family has said goodbye forever (in all its timelines) with a big party at the end of ‘This is Us’ in season 6 (available in Spain through Disney + and Amazon Prime Video).

The Big Three, Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Randall (Sterling K Brown), have had a rough time dealing with the emotional roller coaster that is love and life, with its personal and shared traumas who have played a very important role in shaping the people they have become.

With her mother Rebecca (Mandy Moore) getting sicker by the day during the final season, and ‘This Is Us’ being a tearjerker celebrity, the series was only going to end one way: with us, crying. However, we were still unprepared for all the tears that were shed as the gang bid us goodbye to move on with their lives.

Unfortunately, we will never know what awaits the three main brothers for the rest of their lives, since ‘This Is Us’ creator Dan Fogelman made it very clear that the series would end after these final episodesand, by all accounts, there’s little to no chance of the series returning for a season 7.

Since the series premiered in 2016, ‘This Is Us’ has been praised for its unique and candid take on family tragedies, shared joy in small moments, and what it means to be a family when everyone has gone their separate ways. It won four Emmy Awards and had no fewer than 238 nominations and accolades in the five years since..

However, in May 2021 and after long speculation, it was confirmed that the next episodes would be the last in the series. Fogelman had already suggested for years that this would be the endwhich would allow him to tell the full story he wanted to tell while jumping back and forth in time.

It sounds like she got her wish, as the series got a three-season renewal in 2019, but there was talk of this putting the series on the road to its logical conclusion even before the go-ahead was given. At a For Your Consideration event in 2018, Fogelman said: “We are quite far away. We know where it ends and we know the path for each season. We have always had a plan, we did not want to get stuck.”.

“The series will not stay longer than expected, we have a story to tell, we want to do it the right way.”

Showrunner Isaac Aptaker added in an interview with dead line the next year: “I hope that when we get to our ending, people will think that it’s a really satisfying ending and that it makes sense.and it feels like they’ve seen something that’s a complete piece of work because that’s really how we’re trying to plan it.”

“We’ve had this ending in mind for a long time, so we can plan for it and try to make it feel like a whole, as opposed to a series that goes on forever,” he continued. It has to be said that yes, there was hope that the series could have lasted longer, since at a certain point it incorporated some modern events into its history. Most notably, of course, was the coronavirus, which was addressed during season five and shut down production for several months.

However, the writers have stuck to the initial plan and before the season 6 premiere on January 4, 2022, Fogelman wrote on Twitter: “It’s hard to process that our final season begins tonight. We care deeply and have worked very hard to bring this story to a close in the best possible way.”. And he added, “If you’ve stayed with us all this time: Thank you. It’s been the ride of a lifetime. There’s so much more to the story. You’ll get all your answers.”

Before the premiere of the final episode, Fogelman reiterated his insistence that the time to explore the wonderful but troubled world of the Pearsons was over..

Said (via ETOnline): “My creative well is pretty dry right now and I think we wanted to end the series when we thought we were at our creative strong point before it got too tiring, too hard for us to find ways to keep it special and interesting. I feel like this is it.” the correct endpoint. Who knows what regret or mid-life crisis it will bring us, but I feel like we’re done with these stories for good. At least for a good number of them.“.

Before this, the creator had said that a spin off I was off the table too. “Once you’ve seen the season six finale, the stories of these characters are told,” he explained to Variety. “So there isn’t a spin off real because you already know everything”.

“Is there going to be another life for the story? I guess you can never say never, but I don’t see it. It’s personal to me, and I don’t see myself picking this up again.” During the course of the ending, Randall’s story in particular was left open, with Jack and Rebecca’s adopted son embarking on a career in politics. with the potential to go far.

But even with that thread hanging, Fogleman has no plans to pull on it.

“In my mind, I know what happens to Randall and his family, but it’s destined to go unanswered and end up as promise.”the boss joked. “And let the audience decide what they think happened to Randall. Have we seen an origin story without realizing we were looking at one of the future leaders of the free world? Or was it a completion of Randall’s arc not moving forward further into your career and settle into a role you feel comfortable in?”

Either way, one thing is clear: we will have to accept that we will probably never see these characters again.

If you need us, we’ll be on the couch with a tub of ice cream while we cry our hearts out. Goodbye, Pearson family. It has been great.
