“We just stood there, like, ‘What just happened?'”
actor and musician donald glover has revealed that he and FX’s Atlanta writers were racially harassed while filming in London. Donald and his co-writers Stephanie Robinson and Stephen Gloveralso Donald’s brother, spoke to Insider about the racism they experienced during the Television Critics Association’s winter press conference.
Stephen explained that the incident occurred on his first night in London, when a group of drunk people approached the team while they were standing on the street near their residence. Stephen said: “This group of people is coming up. And maybe one of them sees Donald or recognizes him. And he stops and they start asking if they know of any place around here to get something to drink. I think we were talking to them, for a second. There’s this girl, and two or three guys.”
One of the men allegedly suggested that the ‘Atlanta’ crew could go into a nearby bar that was closed at the time, because he said that “you carry hammers”. Incredulous, Stephen Glover explained: “All the writers on ‘Atlanta’ are black. The guy was alluding to the idea that we all have hammers, and we could walk into this place, which we don’t even know about.”
Stefani chimed in to say that was “insulting” as the man became violent, saying: “You are black, you have been in jail and you do things like that”. The writers of ‘Atlanta’ were talking to the girl, whom her friend took away and yelled at her: “Run. They’re going to rape you”. Donald Glover, whom we have also seen in ‘Star Wars’, concludes: “We just stood there, like, ‘What just happened?'”
The incident occurred when the crew was filming the third season of ‘Atlanta’, which will premiere on Disney+ on March 24. The sitcom has confirmed, with corroboration from the president of FX, John Landgraf, and Donald Glover himself, that the series will premiere its fourth and final season later this year. Landgraf recently said that fans should “expect the unexpected” and “enjoy the ride” when the new season premieres.
According Nicole Austin-Hillerywho heads the Program dedicated to the USA within the 2022 World Report of the Human Rights Watch: “The black population in the United States continues to suffer significant economic disparities stemming from systemic racism. that has repercussions across generations, and border policies have shattered the right to seek asylum while officials subject immigrants to violent and abusive treatment.
Despite not having large audiences, which usually move a little below one million annual viewers, ‘Atlanta’ has become a cult comedy that observes without filters some of the most pressing problems of the country’s present.
