Amazon Prime Video has released the poster and subtitled trailer for the series based on the 1992 film “A League of Their Own,” about the first women’s baseball championship, which took place in the 1940s in the United States. The preview excels at recreating the period and is far more realistic – and dramatic – than the original film.
For those who don’t remember, director Penny Marshall’s comedy featured Geena Davis and Madonna as players, and Tom Hanks was the team’s manager.
The adaptation was developed by screenwriters Will Graham (“Mozart in the Jungle” series) and Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City”) and is clearly not a literal remake, but a “modern look” at history, including approaches to race. and sexuality which has been left out of the original story. The preview already clarifies the participation of black players, not seen in the film crew of the 90s.
The cast of the series includes screenwriter Abbi Jacobson, Chanté Adams (“The Photograph”), D’Arcy Carden (“The Good Place”), Gbemisola Ikumelo (“Famalam”), Kelly McCormack (“Space Agents”), Roberta Colindrez (“Vida”) and Priscilla Delgado (“Juliet”).
It is worth mentioning that the Amazon production is, in fact, the second series derived from “A Very Special Team”. CBS unsuccessfully attempted a first approach in 1993, shortly after the film’s premiere, with Megan Cavanagh and Tracy Reiner reprising their film roles. But without the most famous cast members, the series aired after three episodes, due to low ratings.
With the English title of the film, “A League of Their Own” opens on 12 August.
