“It’s hard to want to play a character that hurts little girls.”
In the second season of ‘Euphoria’ it is not uncommon to find creepy or heartbreaking scenes, particularly those involving the main character Rue (Zendaya). However, it turns out Sam Levinson’s drama was destined to be even worse than what we’ve already seen. Martha Kellywho plays Laurie, the brooding drug dealer, spoke with Variety about the scene between her character and Rue, and how it turned out to be something different than she first imagined.
Kelly refers to the scene where Rue gets into a bathtub and Laurie injects her with morphine, but says the script was “even creepier” and left her “heartbroken”: “In the script it’s even creepier, because Laurie is helping her get naked and get in the bathtub, and that borders on almost pedophile imagery. Initially, I was like, ‘I can’t do this.’ It’s hard to want to play a character that hurts little girls,” she said.
Turns out Kelly talked to him. showrunnercreator/writer/executive producer Sam Levinson about the scene and expressed his discomfort, which he noted: “He was so nice about it. I talked to him, although I decided not to ask him to change anything, because I firmly believe that I am more of a comedian than an actress. So I would never tell a writer or director to change anything for me, because I feel so lucky to have been invited in the first place,” she explained.

Although Kelly didn’t want to “meddle” with what she calls her “egocentric discomfort,” Levinson ultimately decided to shoot the scene differently. Kelly said: “I was glad when Sam told me we were going to shoot the bathroom scene a little out of focus.and that some things were being changed due to the hiatus we took in filming due to the pandemic.” Meanwhile, Zendaya recently denied claims that the series glorifies drug use, saying the show is designed to “help people feel a little less alone in their experience and their pain”.
Laurie in ‘Euphoria’ is played by Martha Kelly. Best known for her role in ‘Baskets,’ the 53-year-old comedienne began her acting career in 2016. Since then, she has starred in a number of notable films, including ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ ‘Marriage Story,’ and the ‘American Gods’ series. She also voices a character named Bethany in the animated series ‘The Great North’.
Kelly’s unforgettable character in ‘Euphoria’ is a sure sign that we’ll be seeing more of the actress in larger roles soon. For now, though, we’ll have to keep an eye on upcoming episodes of ‘Euphoria’ to see more of this brooding, albeit monotonous, character.
