A 4-year-old boy died after being shot inside his home, in the Sol Nascente neighborhood, in the city of Santa Inês, Maranhão, last Monday 13th. According to the civil police, José Carlos Souza de Azevedo Filho was shot by his father, a military police officer, who was holding the gun when it accidentally went off.

The child was saved, but did not survive the injury and died in hospital. The case is investigated by the 1st police district of Santa Inês as manslaughter, that is, when there is no intention to kill.
The Civil Police also stated that the firearm used was seized by the Maranhão Military Police and will be subjected to assessments.
The 7th Battalion of the Military Police of Maranhão, based in Santa Inês, of which José Carlos’ father sergeant belongs, has published a note of condolence for the boy’s death.
“The commander of the 7th BPM, Major QOPDM Danyelle, his officers and soldiers express deep regret for the death of José Carlos de Souza de Azevedo Filho, son of 2nd Sergeant PM Azevedo. In this moment and pain, the 7th Military Police Battalion sympathizes with the family and friends expressing their sincere feelings,” the statement reads.
