‘The Whale’ is based on the play of the same name released in 2012 written by Samuel D. Hunter, who has also been in charge of the film’s script. “Writing the script for this film has been an act of love. This story is deeply personal and I am very grateful to be able to reach a larger audience. Also, I’ve admired Darren ever since I watched ‘Requiem for a Dream’ while he was writing my first plays in college. I am tremendously grateful that he brought his talent and unique vision to this film,” Samuel stated when the project was announced.
