This is the first indication of CORALIE FARGEAT To the category, and makes it only the 9th woman to be nominated for the best direction in almost 100 years of Oscar existence. Also, so far, only three of the nominees have taken the statuette home. Then the Rolling Stone Brazil Remember the women who made history in the biggest awards in cinema:
Lina Wertmüller, the first indicated
The first indication of a woman to the category of best direction in the Oscar only took place in the 49th edition, almost half a century after the beginning of the award. The precursor was the Italian Lina Wertmüllerfor the movie Pasqualino Seven Beauties1975.
Despite the historical nomination, the women’s victory would still take many years to happen. In that year’s edition, Wertmüller lost the gold statuette to John G. Avildsen (1193-2017), for their work in Rocky: A fighter (1976), the first feature of what would become a large franchise starring Sylvester Stallone.
Even with Lina Wertmüller nominated in 1977, it was not until 1994 that another woman was remembered in the best direction category in the Oscars. At the time, Jane Campion competed for the gold statuette for The piano (1993) and, like its predecessor, did not take to the prize, which went to Steven Spielberg put Schindler’s list (1993).
A decade after the indication of Campionit was the turn of Sofia Coppola appear among the Oscar nominees for best direction for their second feature, Encounters and mismatches (2003), starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. She did not win and, even though she was one of the most prestigious directors in Hollywood, has not been nominated again to the category to this day.

She made history by becoming the first non-white woman to conquer the category and her film led her to repeat the achievement of Biletic A decade earlier, by winning the best film statuette, the most prestigious Oscar award.
