By God’s Order on Disney+: This series with Andrew Garfield is not to be missed!

This is true crime The high quality that Disney+ offers. By God’s Order is the harrowing story of a double murder in Utah in 1984: Brenda Lafferty, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, who confirms her revelatory status, and her 15-month-old granddaughter. A barbarity born of religious fundamentalism by extremist Mormons who claimed to obey God’s revelation.

Created by Oscar-winning Harvey Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, The Order of God is an adaptation of John Krakauer’s book of the same name. The latter is also the author of the book in the wild, this nonfiction book unearths one of the most high-profile criminal cases in United States history. And Dustin Lance Black turns it into a television masterpiece that rings even stronger today.

He brings together an extraordinary cast and manages to make this mini-series in seven episodes much more than just a particularly attractive crime story. It’s also a fascinating portrait of a hyper-religious and oh-so-dysfunctional family. It’s an enlightening (and unglamorous) look at the Mormon community at its core mainstream and one of its extremist branches.

It also examines some of the darkest chapters in Mormon church history and some of its most controversial doctrines, such as polygamy. Finally, it is a reflection on how religious belief can inspire both good and evil and restrain the mind from critical judgment.

At the center of the story and our guides throughout the investigation are two fictional police officers who investigate murders. Detective Jeb Peary (Andrew Garfield) is a devoted family man and a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly referred to as the LDS or Mormon Church). Detective Bill Taba (Gil Birmingham) is not Mormon, and the fact that he is Native American makes him a Lamanite of the LDS faith, whose dark skin is a curse from God.

The relationship between the two men is another strong point of the series. With some particularly powerful moments that show how they manage to find a common language and a real communion in the exercise of their profession, despite the cultural gap that separates them. Garfield is particularly concerned with the way he approaches Jeb’s character, whose faith has been shaken by this investigation. Far from the extraordinary attitude that we can get to know him, he shows another side of his talent.

As for the fiery Brenda (Daisy Edgar-Jones), clearly unsuited to the subservience of women demanded in certain LDS circles, she marries the suave Allen Lafferty (Billy Hawley) without realizing what she’s getting herself into. The Lafferty clan is led by a strict and violent patriarch (Christopher Heyerdahl), whose sons Ron and Danny (Sam Worthington and Wyatt Russell) decide to go their own way in the most terrible ways.

The writing, sensitive and careful, opens the door for brilliant performances in all areas, especially from Sam Worthington, who emerges from these muscular roles, and the deeply disturbing Rory Culkin as the brother. Samuel Lafferty. It’s all made possible by the talents of Dustin Lance Black, who grew up in the Mormon Church. He was the writer and producer of Big Love, another great series about a Mormon family, and it seems to capture the essence of a movement that belongs to another era with stark truth.
