Who was xica manicongo?
Born in the 16th century in Congo, Xica was brought to Brazil as a slavery and lived Saviorwhere I worked as a boot in the lower city. His surname, “Manicongo”, was a title used in the kingdom of Congo to refer to leaders and divinities, which suggests a position of importance in his homeland.
Xica was reported in 1591 to the Sacred Office Court for “Crime of Sodomy”, a charge by the Portuguese Matias Moreira. Among the “crimes” indicated there were its sexual orientation and the way in which it dressed, contrary to the rules imposed by the colony. As punishment, he was forced to wear men’s clothes and adopt a male name, otherwise he was burned alive if he had not made.
Representation in the parade
Four trans women and disguise gave life xica manicgo on the street. The opposite commission presented the dancer Daniela Raio Black, while the singer Hud represented it as a priesthood of quimber in the kingdom of the Congo.
In the float that interpreted Salvador, the singer Pepita personified Xica as a slavery. Bruna Maia has already emerged in a staging on the Inquisition, symbolizing the persecution that Xica faced. Overall, the parade had 28 trans people, according to school advice.
The importance of Xica Manicgo for the LGBTQIA+ community is also reflected outside the carnival. In 2022, the city council of San Paolo approved a bill to appoint a way in the city in his honor. The text, signed by the then councilor Érika Hilton (PSOL-SP), underlined that “Xica represents the struggle of the Brazilian disguises for the right to memory and recognition”.
