The Mexican government could seek other commercial partners beyond the United States, said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday after the President of the United States Donald Trump has imposed rates to his neighbor.
Sheinbaum said that Mexico can change its “if necessary” commercial alliances, referring to the possible continuation of the rates.
The new 25% rates imposed by Trump on the imports of Mexico and Canada have entered into force on Tuesday, together with new rates on Chinese products, seriously changing supply chains and long -standing partnerships.
Sheinbaum will talk to Trump, asking for rates on Thursday, he said at his daily press conference.
If the rates continue subsequently, Mexico “will contact Canada and other nations,” he said.
Sheinbaum has threatened his retaliation actions, including rates against the United States. He must describe in detail his decisions to a public event on Sunday in Mexico City.
