‘Those About to Die’ (‘Those who are going to die’) will take us into the Roman Empire from the hand of the director of ‘Independence Day’
Roland Emmerich to make his directorial debut on television with a historical series to travel to the past on gladiators and Romans, ‘Those About to Die’in which he will also be a producer together with the screenwriter of ‘Saving Private Ryan’ Robert Rodat.
‘Those About to Die’ will be produced by the North American channel Peacock and will be based on the non-fiction book by Daniel Mannix of the same name, which is described as a large-scale drama set in the spectacular, complex and corrupt world of gladiators in Ancient Rome. The series features a set of diverse characters through the many layers of Roman society where sports, politics and business intersect and collide. Therefore, it will be one of those series with which, in addition, we will learn history.
“The mighty Roman Empire has always fascinated me, especially the games that entertained the masses through spectacle in the monumental Colosseum,” said Emmerich. “At its core, this is a sports epic led by strong and diverse characters exploring paths to glory, falls from grace and the need to belong to something bigger than oneself. Sports in these ancient times were just as exciting and massive as they are today, and I’m excited to collaborate with my partners, Peacock, High End Productions, the Hollywood Gang, and AGC Studios, to bring this rich world of blood, sweat, and tears to the TV”.
High End Productions has acquired the European distribution rights and will co-finance the series with Peacock.
