‘Trump Effect’: Brazilian steel enters the places of Mac Laren to serve petrobras

The shipyard won the first offer of Petrobras in the current government; With the taxation of the United States, raw materials can become cheaper and allow the increase in local content

RIO – Near 90 years of age, the Mac Laren shipyard is ready to undertake another attempt to revitalize Naval industry Brazilian, one of the sectors most affected by Jet Lava operation And this was stagnant due to the lack of orders in Government of Bolsonaro. Winner of the first offer of Petrobras In the current government, to build four comedies, the company will also participate in the second offer of the state, eight Gaseeeir ships. TO Estadão/TransmissionThe vice -president of Mac Laren Alexandre Kloh has declared that he has an interest in “all that our ability to allow”. According to the manager, after the “Trump effect”, it may be possible to buy the steel in Brazil that would have been imported.

“With this taxation of the United States in steel, what will happen is that our steel can abuse, and this will be good, because it increases local content, comes to buy here what comes from the outside. Without doubt the possibility of falling the price of steel does also with us to look here, our desire is still sitting with the national industry to speak, but if we reach the price, it is another story”, said Kloh.

Negotiations are starting strong now, Kloh said. Overall, it will be between 23,000 and 24,000 tons of steel plates for the construction of the four ships, which, at the beginning of the offers last year, have been mentioned in countries such as China and Indonesia.

To overcome the offer, the national content was reduced from 67% to 50.05%. “This included the dish, at that time of the price, the price of imports was more advantageous than the national industry, but now we will talk to the sector,” he said.

Although he was able to stay alive with other activities during the stagnation of the naval industry, such as port services, among others, Mac Laren has seen its four naval construction sites reduced to two, located in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, and lose thousands of qualified employees. In 10 years, the company has seen its table of 14,000 employees, at the height of the works, at 300, which will now have to be recomposed.

“The challenge is their redevelopment. Since the industry has been dismantled, you have a redevelopment, because the workforce that was super qualified at that moment, but what they did? The construction of handy ships increases between the intake between 1,500 and 2,000 people.

He observed that to support the growth of naval industry in Brazil, government support must become a state policy, in order not to be intermittent. For this, there must be more orders, continuously. The company plan of Petrobras by 2029 is a large locomotive of this growth, but it is still soon to say that there will be a recovery as occurred in the 2000s, when the sector has reached more than 90,000 direct jobs, apart from indirectly, which, in Kloh, added half a million people together. “It is a sector that has a very strong development capacity,” he said.

According to him, the Rio Grande shipyard, where the clogs of the manias will be made, the partner Ecovix in the offer, for example, which will continue with the inactive capacity after the orders. “Ecovix can make a hull of this per month, 5,400 tons, but it does not work like this. This brings an optimism in the sector, but it is not enough to maintain that industry in your operational capacity, which is very high,” he explained.

Founded in 1938, the Mac Laren shipyard built the first Maritime support fleet of Brazil for Petrobras in the 70s and recognizes that, in addition to the state -owned company, few Brazilian oil companies work with their fleet, which reduces the volume of orders to Brazilian ships. And it is from the state that another bet will also come for the company: the revitalization of old platforms and the inconveniences scheduled for the next few years, which must undergo offers.

“We are talking to Petrobras. The investment plan of Petrobras for the next few years brings us optimism and not only the construction, but the deactivation, renewing (Revitalization) platforms. When we look at this plan and we can see at least five years with lever shipyards, “he said.
