The Turkish police arrested the mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu on Wednesday morning (19), considered the main political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in an operation linked to an investigation into corruption.

The information was issued in an x ​​publication by the same politician, which states that his residence was invaded by the Turkish authorities.

“Hundreds of police officers appeared to my door and invaded my home. I have confidence in my nation,” he wrote, that he was brought to the police headquarters, according to one of his advisers.

According to the local press, the arrest warrant against Imamoglu was issued on charges of “extortion, corruption, fraud and manipulation of the offer by a criminal organization” and “help and complicity with the PKK terrorist organization”.

In the police operations this morning, in addition to the mayor of Istanbul, about 100 people close to him were also arrested, including entrepreneurs and the well -known Ismail Saymaz journalist.

“We are facing a great tyranny, but I want you to know that I will not give up,” added Erdogan’s rival.

After the arrest, the Town Hall of Istanbul prohibited the political events and public readings of the press release until March 23, in apparent effort to avoid protests.

Reports point out that Imamoglu was put under investigation for several accusations shortly after having announced his intention to run to the next presidential elections, scheduled for 2028.

The CHP, the main opposition party of Türkiye, which has elected Imamoglu twice as mayor of Istanbul, ranked the arrest as a “blow against national will”.

The detention took place after a research in the Imamoglu house, one day after the University of Istanbul cancels his diploma, obtained in the early 90s, considering him false – preventing him from participating in the electoral race.
