Winner of the 2024 Gramado Festival, the film starring Ângelo Antônio and Babu Santana premiered on Thursday, 27, in theaters
With the growth of demand for national cinema since I’m still here (2024), it is impossible not to comment on the next Brazilian releases deserving prominent. Among them, we have West againwinner of the category Best Movie in the 53rd edition of Gramado Film Festival.
Written and directed by Erico Rassithe film tells the story of two men from the backlands of Goiás, Scotch (Ângelo Antônio) and Durval (BABU SANTANA), left by the same woman and now face the difficult task of dealing with their feelings of abandonment and frustration. Desolate, the two find themselves about to start a physical dispute in order to relieve the pain of loneliness.
Unlike the classic American western movies, whose focus is to demonstrate the bravery of men through strength, both physical and war, the feature film chooses a very different approach. The characters of Erico Rassi They undergo an acceptance process that happens in a sneaky way, with a subtle touch of humor. This process that would not be possible without Jerominho (Rodger Rogério) and the special participation of Antonio Pitanga as Hermit.
Throughout the film, the story introduces the relationship of Scotch with Jerominho. While the relationship grows with the time of coexistence, Angelo Antonio’s character opens slowly and finding space for dialogue with a retired gunslinger who divides the same burden: the ties of the word “longing”.
– Have you enjoyed someone?
– Just from afar.
– Like this?
– Without the person knowing …
In visual terms, it is impossible to talk about West again without acclaiming the art direction of Carol Tanajura that makes use of pastel tones, classic style Western American, creating a fusion with elements of Brazilian culture, and the direction of photography of André Carvalheirawhich often uses the open plane by conveying the pain of feeling to the beauty of the Goian backlands.
The soundtrack of the feature has a crucial function to understand the feeling of the characters, acting almost as a caption of what is not said by the protagonists. And so, the choice of song “Everything will pass”, Nelson Nedserves the narrative as a tailor -made hat.
“How can someone steal a woman, you Antonio? The film shines by exposing the idea that men put the woman as an object of possession and blame each other, instead of seeking reflection while dividing cachaça doses and sucking half a lemon.
In words of Antônio Pitanga“West It shows, in a way, a discussion of why this brutality, but also a lightness, is a west that is not an American west, it is a Brazilian West. ”
