Ivan and Viktor Drago, known as villains in the Rocky universe, will have their own movie, in a new spin-off of the Creed series.
The information was disclosed exclusively by The casing, with Robert Lawton in charge of the script for the new boxing movie set in the Rocky universe. The film’s plot details are kept under wraps, but the film is known to focus on Ivan (Dolph Lundgren) and his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu).
Lundgren even revealed in late 2021 that a spin-off on the Drago family was in development. Lawton wrote “Becoming Rocky”, a production that tells the story of the creation of “Rocky” in 1976, earning him the Academy Nicholl Fellowship in 2021.
The success of the “Becoming Rocky” screenplay, coupled with Lawton’s “Dragon” speech, led MGM executives to offer him the job. It is not yet known who will direct the film, nor if Sylvester Stallone will be involved in the spin-off.
Ivan Drago was the main villain in 1985’s “Rocky IV” after killing Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), a friend and rival of Rocky Balboa, during an exhibition match. Eventually, Rocky avenged Apollo by defeating Drago in the Soviet Union, the fighter’s home country.
The Rocky franchise gained new life in 2015 with the release of “Creed”, which centered on Adonis “Donnie” Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan, the illegitimate son of Apollo Creed. The young fighter is trained by Rocky and has already returned for a 2018 sequel, “Creed II”, which featured the showdown between Donnie and Viktor Drago, the son of Ivan Drago.
Lundgren returned as Ivan and Munteanu made his debut as Viktor Drago. The character will also return in “Creed III”, whose premiere is scheduled for March 3, 2023 and will be directed by Michael B. Jordan himself. “Dragon” does not yet have an announced release date.
