NCIS has been a safe bet for M6 for many years. Each new episode managed to capture millions of curious people who wanted to know what new murder investigation Gibbs and his team were going to investigate. But it seems that the golden age of the detective series is behind it.
Indeed, while M6 has been airing NCIS at a rate of one episode per night since July 9, it will offer two new ones in a row starting this Saturday, July 30. The change, which, if it can please some fans, also means that Season 19 will end airing on August 6, a few weeks earlier than originally planned.
Since the start of Season 19, NCIS’s ratings have continued to decline. Originally offered in the Friday evening time slot, M6 made a bet last March to offer unaired episodes of these new episodes on Tuesday evenings against Koh Lanta.
However, the chain ended airing the unaired episodes in May, with the series still in the process of airing in the United States at the time. For its recovery, on July 8, M6 tried innovation once again, airing NCIS on Saturday night.
Unfortunately, this new time failed to convince the viewers, who gradually left the TV screens. Last Saturday’s episode 17, titled “The Weight of Secrets,” drew just 1.02 million viewers, or 5.5% of the market share among women under fifty.
At the start of season 19, a new episode of NCIS drew 2.32 million fans (9.9% 4+ / 13.1% FRDA-50). In comparison, the opening night of the 18th season in March 2021 gathered 3.22 million people (or 12.8% of the public). Disappointing figures that prompted the channel to speed up the airing of NCIS season 19.
It should be noted that this new burst of episodes was marked by the departure of Mark Harmon, who had been serving as Leroy Jethro Gibbs since the inception of NCIS in 2003. The actor, who said goodbye in episode 4, has been replaced by Gary Cole, who for the occasion plays FBI agent Alden Parker, the new supervisor of Agents Torres and Knight. A change that probably alarmed loyal fans of the series.
Despite this decline in audience in France, NCIS continues to be a hit in the United States and has already been renewed for a 20th season, due to air at the beginning of the school year on CBS. A new spin-off in Sydney is also in the works.
Catch new episodes of NCIS Season 19 every Saturday night from 9.10pm on M6.
