Cinema reveals curiosities of horror films typed by women

Beatriz Saldanha is responsible for masters of macabre: the horror filmmakers around the world, which takes place until April 21 in São Paulo

Until April 21, the São Paulo unit of the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center (R. Álvares Penteado, 112 – Historic Center of São Paulo) receives the show Master Master: The Horror Filmmakers around the Worldwhich brings works directed by women from different parts of the world.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil, The researcher and film critic Beatriz Saldanhamainly responsible for the curatorship of 28 horror films – including five Brazilian productions – revealed that the project came from a survey of years that first resulted in a course taught by it in 2022, with the intention of highlighting the work of women in horror.

“Criticism and academic research, for a long time ignored them [essas cineastas]. So it’s a way of trying to handle omissions of the names that I consider important “it says.

Beatriz’s trajectory for the world of horror

Before embarking on the women’s works in horror, Beatriz He fell in love with the genre. Since he was five years old, she had shown interest in horror films and, in 2017, created the site Les Diaboliques Magazineto approach the subject. Both interest ended up gathering during the process that took her to the show:

“Some directors I already knew the movies, but I didn’t know they were theirs, and I thought it was really cool to realize that they were always there and they were always part of my story in some way.”says Beatriz.

“Undoubtedly, it is the largest project I have ever worked in”

To the Beatrizthe work was rewarding but laborious. After having the project accepted, she became intensely involved in the coordination: “The Breno [Lira, produtor da mostra] He left everything to my position. So who was going to do the illustration? How was the programming to be? Who was going to debate the movies? I translated the texts and did everything. I’m in everything inside the show “divide.

Before you arrive in São Paulo, Master Master: The Horror Filmmakers around the World passed through the units of Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte do CCBB. Second Beatrizyou feedback received in the period enhanced the project:

“In Belo Horizonte it was beautiful. The theme was Cinephilia, Women and Horrorand several women kept commented that they felt no room to talk about it. It was a super boned moment for them to see that there are many other women interested in the subject. This debate was super egal “account.

In addition to being responsible for the curator and the performance of the show, Beatriz He was also responsible for translating four titles present in the program, which were still unpublished in Brazil. Check it out:
