Fantastic Quartet Cinema Says movie was made ‘like Stanley Kubrick Faria’

Matt Shakman revealed that he wore old lenses and practical sets to create a retro aesthetics inspired by the 1960s

The director Matt Shakman stated that the new MCU movie, Fantastic Four: First Steps, It was made as if it had been directed by Stanley Kubrick In 1965. The statement was made in an interview with the magazine Wrappublished on April 4.

“I really wanted to make the movie look like in 1965 the way Stanley Kubrick would have done,” Shakman said.

“We use old lenses and a more filming approach of the time. Of course we still have a lot of CGI, but we prioritize practical and miniature sets, such as the spacecraft of over four meters built especially for the movie.”

Fantastic Four: First Stepsmarks the group’s debut in Marvel’s cinematic universe. Before that, the heroes team has appeared in two versions produced by the former Fox: the first in the 2000s, with two films that are now remembered with nostalgia; and the second in 2015, directed by Josh Trankwho suffered interference and refilling and was poorly received by critics.

The new feature takes place in an alternative universe with retro-futuristic aesthetics, inspired by the space race and the optimism of the 1950s and 1960s. According to the director:

“It’s about JFK and optimism. We imagined these four going to space in place of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. They are astronauts, adventurers, the most famous family in the US-only then become superheroes.”

Production is set in an isolated universe of other Marvel films. There are no participations of other characters, cross references or easter eggs.

“We are in our own universe, which is wonderful and liberating. There is no other heroes, there is no Iron Man, none of this. They are the only ones in this world. It’s a corner of our MCU,” said Shakman.

The cast has Pedro Pascal like Reed Richards (Mr. Fantástico), Vanessa Kirby like Sue Storm (invisible woman), Joseph Quinn like Johnny Storm (human torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach like Ben Grimm (the thing). RALPH INSON interprets the villain Galactus, while Julia Garner It assumes the alternative version of the silver surfer, Shalla-Bal. They are also in the cast Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser and John Malkovich.

Fantastic Four: First Steps debut in Brazilian theaters on the day July 24, 2025. The film opens MCU phase 6, which will end with the feature films Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for 2026 and 2027.
