Alicia Vikander and Lara Croft are over. While the license of the saga is being sold again, the actor unfortunately loses the iconic role.
It’s official: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) no longer owns the rights to the Tomb Raider film franchise, which consists of three feature films, the most recent of which, starring Alicia Vikander, was released in 2018.
The studio had until May of this year to create and release a new Tomb Raider: so it lost the rights to the license and, as Deadline confirmed, Alicia Vikander is losing the role of Lara Croft.
Graham King’s production company GK Films has put the rights to the saga up for sale and is now looking for a new headliner. According to TheWrap, there is even a bidding war underway. Since 2011, Graham King has actually owned the film rights to the famous video game from Square Enix LLC. which has been a huge success since its debut in 1996.
Of course, Angelina Jolie started the film series in 2001 with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Two years later, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Cradle of Life was born. Two feature films were then co-produced by Paramount.
Meanwhile, Alicia Vikander reprized the role for MGM’s reboot of Roar Uthaug, a production that earned $274.7 million at the worldwide box office for distributor Warner Bros. A sequel, which was supposed to return the Swedish actor in the shoes of an adventurous archaeologist, was then announced and was in development from 2019. The release date was even planned: March 2021, right in the middle of the pandemic. .
On the production side, Ben Wheatley, most recently Misha Green, showrunner of HBO’s supernatural series Lovecraft Country, was approached as recently as last year.
In an interview with EW published on July 19, Alicia Vikander talked about the future of the sequel, hoping it will happen soon.
As for the MGM and Amazon takeovers, I have no idea. Now that’s a bit of politics. I think Misha and I are ready, so it’s something in someone else’s hands, to be honest. -Alicia Vikander
Then the actor spoke briefly about Misha Green’s vision for the project: “I am happy to present it to the world. I like what he did with Lovecraft Country.“So this is bad news for the actor and for those who wanted to find his iconic role.
Since being acquired by Amazon in an $8.5 billion deal last May, MGM appears to be in the midst of a revamp that will unfortunately be Lara Croft-less.
