Abbott Elementary School got all the credit it deserves, from receiving Emmy nominations in 2022 to getting a coveted spot in ABC’s primetime lineup. While the accolades were great, the special sauce for the success of the teacher-centered comedy was the show’s eclectic faculty. The actor explained what makes the sitcom so special after its skyrocketing popularity in the first season.

But the mockumentary format suited the series well, as creator Quinta Brunson drew inspiration from her caring mother. Her version of her followed Brunson by saying that she knew how special the comedy was when the cast began filming the pilot.
The stage and television actor knew workplace comedy was something special from the moment he read the script. He liked the humor of the show in imagining Jacob and the world of him. Perfetti recalled what it was like to think of another actor playing the role of the militant teacher on the public city bus:
It was this alchemical thing that felt good. I get this feeling of jealousy just thinking of someone else doing it [the role].
It’s hard to think of another actor to play the character. Fortunately, Perfetti didn’t have to watch TV in anger when he landed the role. From the start, it was the ABC sitcom’s writing and mockumentary style that made it stand out. As for Jacob, the first season made him the subject of jokes with his overzealous and naïve nature of him. Despite his personality, the character played a significant role in the portrayal, as the show treated his LGBTQ + story in a new way by falsifying traditional television “coming out” tropes. Hopefully, the series will explore Jacob Hill and his life outside of school more, with Season 2 even bigger than Season 1 with a full 22 episode season.
